Don’t be afraid — just because potatoes are carbohydrates does not necessarily make them a bad thing.

Carbohydrates can be good for your body too, just as long as you eat them at the right time of day. An important rule of thumb is to not eat them late in the evening or at dinnertime, as they take a long time to digest and are high in calories.

However, you can eat them at dinnertime. You can make potatoes part of your evening meal if you wish as long as you eat a small portion. A small amount of potatoes with dinner can actually help you to sleep better, and so they are good for you in the longterm. Try having sweet potatoes as they are healthier and are packed with vitamin A. Steaming is a good way to prepare these potatoes, as boiling them in water can leave them soggy and tasteless. Also, steaming keeps in all the nutrients and can lower the GI value, making them lighter in calories — great news!

Best Timing:

The best time to eat complex carbohydrates is in the morning, as your body can break them down over the course of the day. This isn’t too easy to do with potatoes, but consider adding them to nutritional breakfasts on the weekends. You could put your potatoes through a mouli and make a rosti by combining the pieces together and then grilling the patty. This is delicious with poached eggs and some spinach — a great start to your Saturday!
