Nestled in Barrio Norte, Buenos Aires, is a magnificent bookshop called El Ateneo Grand Splendid. In fact, at over 21,000 square feet, one could get lost among all the books, not to mention the splendor of art that is featured throughout.
This architectural wonder, once called the Grand Splendid Theatre, was designed by architects Peró and Torres Armengol, and opened in 1919. In the late twenties, the theatre was converted into a cinema, bringing the first sound films to Argentina. In 2000, architect Fernando Manzone transformed the building into an enormous bookstore.
Manzone kept the feeling of The Grand Splendid Theatre, leaving the elegance and the works of art intact. The idea paid off as it has become one of the biggest tourist attractions in Buenos Aires that welcomes over one million visitors every year. You can visit the official website here.
