Real quick: How many pictures of yourself do you have on your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter profile?

Even those of us who don’t use social media all that much haven’t been able to avoid having our picture posted somewhere on the Web.

It’s hard to believe the camera was only invented 130 years ago. And it’s really hard to believe how far the technology has come since then.

The early 1900s saw a rise in the use of cameras and photography in general. During this time, we saw the beginnings of what would become photographic technology giants such as Nikkon, Olympus, and Canon.

As time passed, these companies began producing smaller and smaller cameras with ever-quickening shutter speeds. Soon enough, cameras – once seen as a miracle of modern technology – became fairly commonplace.

But that doesn’t mean they became any less useful. In fact, in the 1970s, NASA paid Nikon to develop a camera to be used on Apollo 15. Nowadays, photography is used in everything from medical procedures to crime scene investigations, and more.

And, of course, there is the recreational side of photography. It’s hard to fathom, but it’s estimated that over one trillion (that’s twelve zeros) pictures were taking in the year 2015 alone.

Presumably, most of them were of your dinner.
