How to Find the Best High School Study Abroad Program

Study Abroad

Your high school years can be the best and most exciting years of your life, especially if you choose to study abroad. There are so many awesome study abroad opportunities right now for high school and college students. In fact, there are more opportunities than ever before. The trick is to find the best school for your particular study and living needs. For instance, if you want to study French, there is no sense in looking into schools in Sweden. Check out these tips for finding the best high school study abroad programs.

Figure Out Why You Want to Study Abroad

The first thing you need to do is sit down and figure out your reasons for wanting to study abroad and what you hope to get out of the experience. It may be that you simply want to have a change of scenery for a few years, or that you want to challenge yourself. You may want to experience another culture and learn more languages. You may be looking for adventure, while at the same time wanting to focus your studies on a specific area. It may be that you want to have the experience of living in a different country. It will also look really great on your resume and college applications. If you are looking to go on to college, check out an exchange program that is sponsored by the State Department, or a summer exchange program at a prestigious university such as Oxford.

Figure Out How Long You Want to be Away

Next, you need to decide on the length of time you want to study abroad. For instance, if you aren’t looking for anything long-term, you may want to consider one of the many Israel summer programs. Or, you may want to do something that allows you to study for one year abroad and then complete your studies at home. There are many options available to you. If you are apprehensive about leaving home for an extended period of time, you may be interested in one- or two-week study abroad trips that will give you a taste of what it is like to do your studies away from home.

Figure Out Your Budget

One of the most important considerations when it comes to studying abroad is your budget. You need to know that you are going to be able to afford everything from schooling to housing, as well as incidentals. For many students, cost prohibits them from being able to live this dream, or at least makes it seem like it is impossible. Obviously, some programs are going to cost a lot more than others. For instance, programs that offer a lot of travel are likely to be quite costly. You need to look at what you can afford, and if there are any scholarships or bursaries you may be eligible for.

Figure Out how You are Going to Get There

Once you have decided for sure that studying abroad during high school is exactly what you want to do, you need to figure out how to make the dream a reality. You need to figure out what you need to do in order to get there. This doesn’t mean that you have to simply book a flight. There is so much more to work out before you even begin to think about making the actual transportation arrangements. You need to find a way to make it all happen, whether it is with an exchange program through your school, a study abroad program offered by a third-party provider, or a fellowship or other type of grant program, such as State Department Exchanges.
