With fossil fuels predicted to run out by 2088 (see here) and oil consumption forcibly dropping to 20% within the next 40 years (here), the whole world — let alone the US — will need to switch to renewable, greener energy sources in order to sustain its evermore industrial, evermore numerous population. That being said, the US — with big names such as Gore, Musk and even Hollywood stars such as Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo Dicaprio spreading awareness — is one of the first countries to have come up with an outline as to how this transition will be made. Below are 5 ways the US will switch to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
1. Increased Efficiency = Lower Energy Requirements
One major benefit with electric systems are their ability to waste very little energy. Combustion motors are inefficient systems in that they lose much of their energy in the form of heat, vibration and sound. With electric motors, virtually all of the electricity is used to do useful work. Tesla are taking point on this one.
A new study suggests this increase in efficiency alone will mean that overall energy requirements will drop by a third (33%), meaning energy demands will be more easily met by renewable energy sources.
2. It’ll be a Breeze
Literally. Windfarms — both onshore and off — will equate to 50% of the total amount of renewable energy being met. This makes them the primary source of green sustainable energy.
3. Starlight Powered Cities
Coming in close 2nd with 45%, solar panels are becoming becoming increasingly accessible for the general public, at cheaper prices. We won’t have to worry about sunlight running out any time soon.
4. Utilising the Minor Constants
I say minor, however they’re anything but. Possible sources such as tidal forces, waves and geothermal energy make up the smaller portion of renewable energy production, however their consistency is a major benefit since the wind doesn’t always blow, and the sun isn’t always above us.
5. But When the Sun Doesn’t Shine?
You’ll be saying “That’s great and all, but when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow, the remaining sources won’t meet our demands!” True, and that’s why Tesla (yes, the car company) is now setting it’s IQ laden team on producing both household and industrial battery packs, which store any unused energy for night times and rainy days.
