Who doesn’t love to travel? Traveling is probably one the best kinds of pleasures this life has to offer to us. But at times, with its countless destinations, all the numerous alternatives, it can be somewhat overwhelming.
Let’s talk Europe, undoubtedly the world’s most popular travel destination. It is flooded with alternatives. Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Bern, Madrid, Venice. The list goes on.
Today, I’m here to make things a little easier for you. I’m here to talk about one of Europe’s oldest and most popular cities, Rome, and why it should be at the top of your priority list.
1. Architecture
For thousands of years, Rome has been the capital to some of the most important empires and nations in history. And with those, it has received a healthy dosage of breathtaking architecture that the entire city almost poses of.
Rome houses 12 of Italy’s 45 UNCESCO heritage sites including the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the Spanish steps, St. Peter’s Square, Navona Square, etc. The architecture is perhaps the first thing that you as a visitor will notice about this city and it is also probably the thing that will last the longest in your memories.
2. History
One doesn’t need any justification on the historical significance of this city. It was from here with the rise of the Roman Empire that the western civilization truly began. For this reason, walking around the city gives you a special feeling that you’re walking in history.
Even the architecture fits this feeling. There are buildings and structures hundreds, thousands of years old, and every part of the city has a special history to it. There are guided tours you could take part in, or if you’re the adventurous kind, you could simply map and plan your own tour!
3. Art
Rome is one of the most popular destinations in the world for art appreciators. Masterpieces of architecture, painting, sculptures, pieces most of us grew up reading, hearing or watching about, are actually present here.
The seer propensity of these masterpieces can make it an almost surreal experience to actually witness them in person. Works of famous artists like Michelangelo, Salvi, Sangallo, Maderno, Bernini, etc. call Rome their home.
There are numerous museums and galleries around the city displaying brilliant artworks, the most popular amongst them being the Villa Borghese Gallery and Museum of Contemporary Art.
4. People
Rome is said to have one of the nicest urban populations in Europe. And by nice, I mean downright friendly, uncharacteristic of most European cities. Italians are known for being hospitable and those in their capital city are no exceptions. And this doesn’t just include those with businesses serving tourists.
From the young to the old, the actual residents of the city are extremely helpful and polite. Maybe it’s their culture or style of living that is just welcoming of new people. Anyway be it romance, intellectual exchanges, or just a jolly good laugh, you’ll find plenty of those in Rome.
5. Fashion shopping
It is the one thing every tourist in Rome never misses. There are many streets in Rome that are lined with stores of Italian and European clothing brands. Zara, Armani, Benetton, Sermoneta are a few examples.
There are plenty of shopping areas in the city, each with its own specialty and flavor. One thing for certain, whether it’s clothes or bags or shoes or what not that’s a part of your fashion sense, Rome will provide you all you need. Most of these things tend to be expensive but the prices are no match for the quality, design and seer magnificence of these products.
6. Religion
This might not be true of everyone but it is definitely worth a mention. Rome houses Vatican City, the world’s smallest nation and the political and religious center of the Roman Catholic Church.
Millions of people flock Rome every year with the primary purpose of visiting this site which is believed to be situated on Apostle Peter’s burial place. Even if you’re of a different religion or a non-believer, the history and appearance of the place should make it an interesting visit.
7. Other sightseeing
If nothing else, this city is simply a sightseeing paradise. There are plenty of landmarks in and around the city that you simply should not miss. You can just rent a taxi at Rome airport and start to explore the city.
And the most peculiar thing is it doesn’t matter whether it’s one day or one month you’re living in this city, there’ll always be a special sightseeing package perfect for you. Meaning, this city will keep you just as entertained in a month as it will the day you arrive here. Now isn’t that something you’d want to be a part of?
8. Food
Italian food is famous worldwide. But you haven’t tasted the true potential of Italian Food until you’ve tried it in Italy. Trust me. Every region in Italy has its own specialty in cuisine and quite nothing beats trying out the local food.
Rome’s specialties include spaghetti alla carbonara which basically is pasta dressed with eggs, bacon and pecorino cheese, baccala which is dried salted cod, and bicatini all’amatriciana which are tube shaped pasta with tomatoes, sliced pork, onions, red chili and white wine. Buon Appetito!
9. Wine
Italians and wine are almost synonymous and you haven’t truly experienced the magnificence of Italian wines till you’ve been to a wine tasting event in Rome. Wine sellers from around the world flock to this city for this particular reason.
There are plenty of wine shops (known as Enotecas) dedicated to this purpose. Also the city regularly hosts numerous wine tasting ceremonies. Although most of these are exclusive and require an invite for entry, you could just as easily find one you can get into.
10. Culture
Italians host one of the oldest and richest cultures of Europe. Throughout history they have been well known for their many festivals and parties. And the modern Romans hold on to this legacy with much pride and commitment.
The capital city of Italy hosts numerous festivals every year that never fail to fascinate its visitors. Being the center of western civilization for thousands of years has definitely left the Romans a bit of cultural legacy.
