Find an “Office” Anywhere: Working While Traveling

Thanks to modern technology, you no longer have to be chained to your desk to get your work done. You can work from pretty much any location in the world, as long as you have an Internet connection. Of course, there are things that you are going to need in order to make working away from the office as convenient as possible. Your office can be anywhere, if you follow these tips.

Devices

If your office is anywhere you happen to be, you need to make sure that you are using the proper devices and accessories. Your devices need to be fully charged, and working efficiently. Keep a power cord with you, as well as a power strip so you can share outlets with others. Keep your gear in a strong bag that will protect everything.

Files

Storing your files in the cloud is great, but you should also keep other copies of your files on your devices. If you are in an area without an Internet connection, you will have access to your files. Keep files in folders so you can access them quickly and easily. Make sure that you know how to connect to the company database and email from other locations, and check your passwords before leaving the office.

Software for Teams

You don’t have to be in the office if you are working with a team. All you need is the right software. USB Network Gate is a great tool that allows you to share the USB devices of a network. You can give others access to a USB device that is connected to your computer, and access the device remotely. You will be able to scan, print, fax, and more. You can even use it to watch your favorite television programs if you decide to take a break, through a remote tuner from any computer in the world.

Make Notes

In addition to new technology, doing things the old fashioned way is also a good idea. Get a diary and make actual notes. Use it for keeping track of meetings, tasks, interviews, telephone numbers, things you need to remember later, etc. If your device suddenly conks out on you, at least you will have access to some data.

Work at Coffee Shops

You may be looking for a place where you can work. Coffee shops are an excellent choice, as long as you find one that has a strong Internet connection, and free WiFi. Use Foursquare to find coffee shops that offer free WiFi, and take advantage of a free work space and great coffee.

Coworking Spaces

Another option is to use coworking spaces. Unlike coffee shops, this isn’t a free option, but it is definitely one to consider. This is a work-friendly space, and it is a place you know is reliable (the space you need and a strong Internet connection). You will be able to really get things done here. Some of these spaces even offer equipment, as well as meeting spaces, and even free coffee and tea. Not only will you have space to work, you will have the opportunity to network with new people. Most coworking spaces also feature great interior design.

Offices

You can also sublet an office space when you need to work away from your regular office. Basically, you will be subletting a desk. You will have to pay for this space, but it is often less expensive than renting coworking spaces, and you have the same facilities. You may even have the use of some office equipment. This is a great option when you need office space in the short-term.
