Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters this month. Fans are beyond pumped to see their favorite characters from the original trilogy reprise their roles.
Seeing some friendly old faces isn’t the only reason why fans are looking forward to the new movie. Leading up to the movie’s release, there has been a lot of media coverage about the new technology that will appear in The Force Awakens. After all, Star Wars is famous for its innovative design. The special effects in the original Star Wars film were groundbreaking for 1977.
The prequel trilogy; however, was met with a much more lukewarm response. For many fans, it just didn’t have the magic of the original trilogy.
Many fans are happy that The Force Awakens will be returning to its roots by using less CGI and more practical effects, like puppetry, set and prop building. Clearly, director J. J. Abrams learned a thing or two from what made the original Star Wars trilogy so successful and timeless. High-tech isn’t always best. Sometimes it’s better to go back to the basics.
Innovative special effects aren’t the only thing the original Star Wars trilogy had going for it. Along with the fantastic special effects, Episodes IV, V and VI also made masterful use of some very basic design principles that contributed to the visual excitement and drama of the films.
