You MUST Visit These Breweries if You Ever Visit Michigan

Michigan. It is the only fresh water peninsula in the USA. It is also well known for the Mackinac Bridge, Mackinac Island fudge, and its abundance of lakes, forests and incredibly unpredictable weather. It is home to the Kellogg Company, Post Cereals, and the Ford Automotive Industry.

Something else that makes this great state even more distinctive is the strong love residents have for craft beers. So much so that the micro brewing industry is climbing at an extraordinary rate. In a lot of cities you can probably expect at least one brewery that you can visit for a great tasting beer, and amazing food. But Michigan has many. If you ever have the chance, you should definitely visit a few of these breweries. Here are a list of 20 of some of the best, and most well known breweries in the State. (All links in the headings!)

1. Arcadia Brewing Company- Battle Creek, MI

Located in downtown Battle Creek, Arcadia brews 19 different British-style ales. Stop on in for a good beer, good food, and the free smell of Kellogg and Post cereals being made on both sides of you!

2. Territorial Brewing Company-Springfield, MI

If you are a fan of German-style beer, and German-inspired cuisine, you must visit Territorial Brewing Company.

3. Dark Horse Brewing Company-Marshall, MI

Located in Marshall, MI, east of Battle Creek. Dark Horse Brewing Company has swept the floor in multiple brewing competitions. They offer several seasonal beers, and experimental beers, as well. They offer tours on Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5:00 pm. An admission fee of $10 per person includes a complete tour of their production facility, a tasting of six beers in their VIP Loft and a DH pint glass.

4. Bell’s Brewery-Kalamazoo, MI

Bell’s is Michigan’s oldest craft brewery. Famous for beers like Oberon, and their Two-Hearted Ale, Bell’s is one of the favorites among locals.

5. Olde Peninsula Brewpub-Kalamazoo, MI

Kalamazoo’s first brewpub, they offer over 8 hand-crafted ales on tap that are brewed on site, as well as American cuisine. It was voted Kalamazoo’s favorite downtown restaurant, and there are many good reason why.

6. Midtown Brewing Company-Lansing, MI

Stop in here for great small town beers, food made from scratch, and amazing hospitality. They offer entertainment throughout the week and make you feel welcome.

7. HopCat East Lansing-East Lansing, MI

HopCat offers 100 craft beers on tap, the biggest selection in Michigan. They specialize in Michigan brews, but offer different styles from all over the world too.

8. Harper’s Restaurant and BrewPub-East Lansing, MI

Their beers span from Pale Ales and wheat beers to IPA’s and Stouts. They also have great food, and live music Wednesday-Saturday.

9. B.O.B.’s House of Brews-Grand Rapids, MI

B.O.B.’s House of Brews is an award winning brewery located in the lower-level of the “Big Old Building”. They have four beers that remain on tap and a selection of seasonal beers. Stop in and see for yourself what makes them an award-winning brewery.

10. Founders Brewing Co.-Grand Rapids, MI

Founders focuses on craft beer and refuses to go “mainstream”. They are a must-visit place in Grand Rapids, and the establishment has also become a highly respected brewery worldwide.

11. Grand Rapids Brewing Company-Grand Rapids, MI

The first USDA Certified organic brewery in Michigan, and one of less than two dozen in the country. They only use organic, locally grown hops. They are definitely making a name for themselves in the Michigan brewery scene.

12. Detroit Beer Company-Detroit, MI

The Detroit Beer Company occupies the first two floors of the restored Hartz Building on Broadway in downtown Detroit across from the Detroit Opera House. They offer a wide selection of craft beers made on site, and a delicious American cuisine menu. There is something for everyone here.

13. Atwater Brewery-Detroit, MI

Atwater Brewery was founded in March of 1997 with the purpose of carrying on the rich history of breweries in Detroit. Their brewing process is over 200 years old. You are sure to get a great tasting beer rich in history and tradition here.

14. Brew Detroit-Detroit, MI

Brew Detroit runs small batches, and keep things new and creative. Be sure to check out what they have on offer and enjoy a delicious craft beer.

15. Kilkenny’s Irish Public House-Traverse City, MI

An Irish themed pub, they craft their house ales and lagers with care. For good beer and a good time, you should definitely go and check it out.

16. Mackinaw Brewing Company-Traverse City, MI

They have 6 hand-crafted beers, and some amazing smoked meats. This is the place to enjoy good drinks, good conversation and good food.

17. Cheboygan Brewing Company-Cheboygan, MI

15 miles from Mackinac City, Cheboygan Brewing Company is a re-established local brewery crafting award-winning beers well known throughout all of Michigan.

18. Arbor Brewing Company-Ann Arbor, MI

Ranked Brew Pub Magazine’s “Best brewing in the Midwest” (Michigan Microbrewing). They offer amazing beer and food, unforgettable service, and they have everything from TV to shuffle board to keep you entertained.

19. Blue Tractor BBQ & Brewery-Ann Arbor, MI

The Blue Tractor specializes in hoppier, more astringent lagers and pilsners. They serve American comfort food ranging from baby back ribs, homemade mac and cheese, and even beer can chicken.

20. Grizzly Peak Brewing Company-Ann Arbor, MI

Grizzly Peak brews craft beer that you can watch being brewed from outside, or inside of the restaurant. They also offer a variety of wood-grilled foods to compliment their craft beers.
