15 Dressy Ways To Style With Kimono

FEATURE IMAGE

Originally hailing from Japan, Kimono is their tradition as well as their formal dress. It is a long garb, touching down to the ankles, has lengthy, wide sleeves, and the cloth is wrapped around the body; the left side should cross over the right side, and a sash (known as obi) is tied at the back.

It may look simple to wear, but the material, and the way it is made, is quite complicated. It is said that a kimono is worn by elites, but it is not entirely true. Even though with other types of clothing have been introduced a long time now, kimono is still worn by many elder citizens as their regular clothes. Otherwise, kimono are often worn by the Japanese during any special occasions, or at formal invites, where they are representing their country.

With the twenty first century, the concept of kimono has been modified. That not only kimono are worn by Japanese, this special garb has been spread around the globe. It seems, that whoever visits Japan, is bound to bring a kimono for their loved ones back home. Saying this, even I used to have a kimono back when I was a young girl. Now, when I say modified, I also mean that kimono is not longer worn as the strict traditional costume, but it is now a fashion hit amongst this generation. Kimono are now used as tops, as an extra accessory over a plain simple top, or as a dress. And with the growing number of people owning this special attire, here are some ideas on how to style kimono in a dressy way.

1. trad

Let’s start with the traditional kimono. If you happen to be the owner of one, you don’t have to wait to visit Japan. You can wear it in your city, somewhere at a fancy dress party. Tie up your hair in a high bun, and keep your make-up simple, if your kimono is gorgeous. Studs on your ears, your look is complete.

2. traditional 1

This is a kimono that has been turned into a striking looking blouse and long skirt. The blouse has high collars, and you can sew the sash vertically on your skirt. It will add a dramatic character to your overall costume. Opt for a bright color, and you can even wear it on any formal occasions.

3. dress3

Another near-traditional kimono, you can play around with the obi. You can tie it at the back, at the side, or even at the front. With a simple designed one, you can accessorise with some bangles, a locket dangling from a thin silver chain, and a big, bright clutch.

4. dress1

This kimono dress has beautiful layers at the backside, and the design at the front is enough to make it look elegant. Also, keep the collar high. A large single bracelet can be adorned on one of the hands. You can either go for red lips, or smoky eyes.

5. dress2

This is a very contemporary kimono design. The sleeves are typical kimono sleeves, but the print and the size are playful, and fun. This is a great dress for a summer hangout with friends.

From traditional kimono to contemporary dress designs, kimono can be added to enhance your ordinary regular tops. Just wear a bright colored, or floral prints kimono shirt over a plain colored tank tops.

Another way to wear it is to layer it on your tops and shorts. If your kimono is of the same length of your shorts, it will give off a very cool look.

With a bright, floral kimono, you might choose to stick to neutrals underneath. And, you can finish it off with a cowboy hat, and a big bag.

This kind of kimono tops are very much “in” the fashion right now. The nets at the bottom adds an individuality to the kimono. This is a very stylish look because of the fringe/kimono combination.
