Help Yourself And The Environment: Ways To Use Less Plastic

Do you want to use less plastic and be more environmentally-friendly? Most people are aware that plastic is not biodegradable and dislike contributing to landfills. Additionally, using less plastic will expose you to less of the toxins inside plastic, such as lead. There are a few simple adaptations you can make in your daily life that significantly decrease your use of plastic.

Check out these 10 easy ways to use less plastic here.

1. Stop Buying Drinks In Plastic Bottles

Water, fizzy drinks and fruit juice are often sold in plastic bottles, but these are often non-biodegradable and there are alternative options that are much more environmentally-friendly. For instance, you can buy juice in concentrate form in cardboard boxes and tubes, which are recyclable. You can also buy fizzy drinks in reusable glass bottles, or you can invest in a soda maker your for home. They even sell water in cartons now!

2. Swap Liquid Soap For Bar Soap

Liquid soap normally comes in a plastic bottle and packaging, but bar soap often comes package free, especially if you buy your bar soap from an organic market. You can also often pick up unpacked bar soap at health food stores.

3. Use Reusable Straws Or No Straws

Studies show that around 500 million plastic straws are thrown away every day in the United States, which is enough to fill an 127 school buses every day. Cut straws out of your life and just drink straight from the cup, or considering investing in reusable straws made from paper or stainless steel.

4. Stop Buying Chewing Gum

Since World War II, food scientists have replaced natural rubber in chewing gum with synthetic rubber, which has toxic substances in it. This stops the chewing gum from being biodegradable. Unfortunately, chewing gum isn’t going anywhere.

5. Use Metal Or Glass Instead Of Plastic To Store Food In Your Freezer

A common misconception is that plastic is the only way to store things in the freezer. However, glass jars work well if you only fill them two thirds of the way, to avoid any thermal shock. You can also use stainless steel, metal ice cube trays, or even butcher’s paper.

6. Compost Your Organic Garbage

Considering composting your organic scraps instead of throwing them away with your other garbage. This means your rubbish will be drier, so you will need to use less plastic refuse bags, and you will have made your own rich soil for your plants!

7. Eat Ice Cream From A Cone

Getting ice-cream in a plastic cup is the worst choice environmentally. Swap the plastic cup for a tasty cone to get rid of the rubbish, or even consider buying your own ice-cream maker for your home. You can also get stainless steel ice-cream molds.

8. Buy Reusable Menstruation Products

Instead of using tampons and pads, there are also reusable options that work just as well but are better for the environment. Check out options such as LunaPads, Schoon or GladRags. While they may take a bit of getting used to, once you have used them a few times you will be surprised by just how efficient and handy they are!

9. Bulk Buy Toilet Paper Without Plastic Wrapping

Most toilet paper comes wrapped in plastic sheeting, but if you buy in bulk, you can cut out buying the plastic. You can buy toilet paper in bulk online or at office supply stores such as Staples. This toilet roll comes in a cardboard box that you can reuse or recycle, and you won’t have to worry about buying toilet roll again for a while!
