Have you ever worked in retail? The long hours, the stacking of shelves and the folding of clothes; retail is both exhausting and a lot of fun. However, there are some things retail staff just can’t get away with saying; check out 12 things people working in retail want to tell you.
1. We Have A Love/Hate Relationship With Our Uniforms
We can never decide if we love or hate our uniform – we never have to deal with the long struggle of deciding what outfit to wear to work, but the only reason why is because we wear the same ugly outfit every. Single. Day.
2. We Listen To The Same Music On A Loop
Most retail stores only have one CD – two if you’re very lucky. You learn the words to every single song during your first shift, and after that work feels like a nightmarish groundhog day with Katy Perry providing the music.
3. Smiling For Eight Hours Hurts Your Face
Have you ever tried to smile for 8 hours straight? It’s pretty exhausting, but we understand it is important to seem friendly. However, it’s pretty hard to stay smiling when you have a customer shouting at you because the store doesn’t have their size. I’m smiling on the outside, but put it this way – I’m really, really glad you can’t read my mind.
4. We Enjoy Our Weekdays Off
Working weekends can be difficult, but there is something weirdly satisfying about having a Monday off when everyone else has work – ahhhh, and back to sleep.
5. We Dread The Sales
Working the sales is like nothing else; discarded piles of clothes, screaming children and hoards of determined shoppers pushing their way through. You will never forget your first time working a sale; you can still hear the shouting in your nightmares.
6. Why Is Your Anger Directed Towards Me?
Shouting at me because we’ve run out of steak/play dough/size 5 shoes; it isn’t my fault. I don’t run this company – in fact, I’m not even sure I like working for the company.
7. Why Are You Trying To Flirt With Me?
Dealing with customers is part of the job, but the flirty ones can be a nightmare. Please stop lingering and my till – I don’t want to tell you what my last name is so you can add me on Facebook.
8. We Don’t Mind Your Coupons, But We Do Mind Waiting
There is nothing wrong with saving a bit of money; most people who work in retail earn the minimum wage so we understand the importance of saving. However, if you want to use coupons, please get them out before you come up to the till – it will save both of us time! And no, we don’t take expired coupons. Obviously.
9. We Are Better Than You At Folding Clothes
If there was a qualification in folding clothes, we would have it with a distinction. We have folded more clothes than you have had hot dinners, so don’t worry about trying to refold your items. We appreciate the effort, but we will probably refold it anyway – we are secretly quite proud of our awesome folding skills!
10. What Weird Stuff Are You Doing In The Dressing Room?
Plasters, sandwich wrappers, empty crisp packets, and (the horror) occasionally used condoms. What are you people doing in the changing rooms?!
11. We Wish People Tipped Us
Other minimum wage jobs often come with tips, like waitressing or bar-tending. Could tipping retail staff become a thing? How can we make that happen?
12. We Have Deep Bonds With Other Retail Staff
We love other retail staff; they understand how hard it can be, and they are hard workers themselves. Also, we all hate the same things; sales, Christmas and rude customers – It’s good to talk to someone who understands.
