8-Year-Old Girl Gets Gifts From Crows She’s Been Feeding For 4 Years

Many people leave out birdseed for feathered-friends in the neighborhood, although few get anything in return besides a lovely view of the birds, and a patio polluted with seeds. Eight-year-old Gabi Mann from Seattle, Washington started feeding the crows in her family’s garden, and now this lucky little girl gets gifts from the crows.

Gabie keeps her gifts in specially labeled bags tucked safely inside a bead storage box. After all, these are her most treasured possessions. Her labels are detailed, for instance one containing a broken light bulb reads: “Black table by feeder. 2:30 p.m. 09 Nov 2014.”

Gabie has received all kinds of gifts from the crows, including Lego pieces, beads, buttons, paper clips and pieces of foam. Her favorite gift of all is a pearl colored heart, she said, “It’s showing me how much they love me.”
Gabi started feeding the neighborhood crows by accident, as she was prone to dropping food. She’d climb out of the car and a chicken nugget would fall off of her lap, prompting every crow on the block to circle in for a snack. Gabi noticed and started rewarding the bird’s quick and hungry behavior, feeding them food scraps on her way to and from the bus stop with her brother.

It didn’t take long for the crows to learn who Gabi was and wait for her to get off the school bus each day. The crows were consuming most of Gabi and her brother’s packed lunches, but Lisa, Gabi’s mother, didn’t mind one bit. She said, “I like that they love the animals and are willing to share.”

It was a slow transformation, but soon the whole family became more interested in the crows. By 2013, Gabie and her mother made offering food to the crows a daily habit. The pair now spends each morning filling the backyard birdbath with new water and spreading out plenty of peanuts and dog food. As they set up, the crows gather around and call out to them.

Science Says People Who Are Moody Are Not Fragile, But More Adaptable

Moody people are often thought as difficult people to deal with. Also, there is a sneaking suspicion that they are just being childish and they are mentally fragile.

Women get a raw deal when their bad moods are noticed much more than men, as pointed out in Dr. Julie Holland’s book Moody Bitches. She argues convincingly that women’s moods are a strength, rather than a weakness. A new study from University College of London recently appearing in the Trends in Cognitive Sciences journal also confirms that moodiness is not a bad thing at all and may actually have a biological purpose.

Moods make us more adaptable

The main findings in the UCL study, led by Dr. Eran Eldar, suggest that moods have had an important role in helping us to adapt as we evolved. They are distinct advantages.

“It’s long been known that mood biases our judgments and perceptions, but this effect has usually been regarded as irrational or disadvantageous.” – Dr. Eran Eldar.

Eldar’s work indicates that moods are a very useful tool in helping us to adapt to our surroundings. They provide the basis for useful learning experiences and prepare us better when we are faced with similar situations in the future.

Moods will change our behavior

When we are in a good mood, the positive glow affects our behavior and makes us more adaptable. An example is a stock trader who gains from an investment. His good mood now means he is more prepared to take risks which will help to respond more quickly to a rising market.

We can think of it rather like the good mood becoming more a permanent state as the rewards gain in value. But they are also interconnected so we can see them having a ripple effect as we gain success in skills, wealth and social status, not to mention success in finding a soulmate.

Bad moods will be equally effective in the diminishing returns and convince us that outcomes are worse than they really are. How many times have we said to ourselves, “I knew this was going to happen.” Our expectations are an exact match of all the punishment and negative consequences raining down on us from a merciless sky. In addition, negative moods really can affect our decision making and reasoning.

More studies in this area may lead to a better understanding of depressive and bipolar disorders.

Moods can help us adapt to change

In our evolutionary past, we had to adapt to changes in the seasons and the environment. Moods are really like an evolutionary relic. They reflect how early humans had to adapt to finding food when certain meteorological and seasonal changes were crucial to survival.

Warmer temperatures and more available food were positive factors which reinforced the rewards and chances of survival. Winter and colder temperatures were representative of declining rewards and resulted in different behavior, such as having to hibernate to survive and, of course, a lower mood.

Moods can be reinforced by our thoughts

Another study carried out among bipolar students at the University of Lancaster in the UK, found that positive and negative thoughts were important behavior indicators. The positive thoughts such as repeating a mantra which states that you will indeed do well were influencing moods and subsequent behavior. When the negative thoughts such as fear of having a breakdown were activated, behavior and mood went into a downward spiral. Neutral thoughts, such as acknowledging that you have a lot on your plate, were not nearly as influential in determining mood.

Of course, moods are not the whole answer, fortunately. They are just one element in a complex web of tangled elements such as mind, body, diet, exercise, weather, and social relationships. The important lesson from all this is to realize how moods can help us to adapt to changes more easily. They always have and they always will.

10 Things You Should Not Say To A Grieving Person

When someone you care about is grieving, it is human nature to try to comfort them and help ease their pain. However, sometimes our good intentions can be more harmful than helpful, particularly the things we often say with the intention to make them feel better.

A large part of the problem is our own discomfort with grief and not knowing how to speak to someone who is grieving. Instinctively, we try to “fix” the hurt and make the pain go away. However, grief is a necessary process that cannot, and should not, be dusted under the rug so that the grieving person can feel good again.

As a therapist, I have many times worked with clients who have tried to treat feelings of loss and grief with a band-aid approach, only to find that their unresolved grief has manifested in other areas of their lives. If you want to support someone who is grieving, choose words that convey love and care, rather than offering advice and wisdom. Here are 10 things you should NOT say to a grieving person.

They are in a better place

Even if you know the person believes in a “better” place, the grief they are experiencing is not about where their loved one has gone to, but about the sense of loss that they will never share moments with their loved one again. On a mental level, there might be some solace knowing that their loved one is somewhere better, on an emotional level, hearing that can lead to feelings of anger and resentment that there is a better place other than right here, with people that love them.

What to say instead:

Acknowledge the loss by saying, “I am so sorry for your loss, [he/she] will be sorely missed.” Saying this conveys the message that you recognize that the grief is about the fact that the person is no longer around and that it is a difficult time for everyone.

I know how you feel

Even if you have experienced a similar loss, you DO NOT know how the person feels. There is an expression that goes “no two griefs are the same.” You might be able to relate the the grieving person’s pain, but remember that their time of grief is not about you, it is about them. If you truly have experienced a similar loss, you would know that during times of grief, your thoughts and actions are ruled by your emotions. Hearing someone say they “know how you feel” can sometimes lead to feelings of anger toward that person.

What to say instead:

Do not assume you know how they feel. Rather say, “You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.” This lets the person know that you recognize they are having a difficult time and that you are thinking about them even when you are not around.

It was God’s will

Regardless of your religious beliefs, and even if you know the person shares your faith, when you lose someone you love it is natural to experience feelings of anger and question God or whatever higher power you believe in. Reiterating the role the will of God has played in the person’s loss can fuel these feelings at a time when the grieving person most needs to hold onto their faith.

What to say instead:

If you know the person shares your belief in God, try to remind them that God loves and cares about them and God is aware of their pain. For example, “I pray that God will make it easy for you and your family during this difficult time”.

Everything happens for a reason

There can never be any reason good enough that will make the pain of loss any less. When you say this, you are expecting the grieving person to think about their loss logically, when in reality there is no logic in grief.

What to say instead:

Say something that affirms the questions a person who is grieving will often ask with something like, “It is so hard to know why we lose people when we do. I am so sorry for your loss.”

You can still have another child/remarry

This is probably the most distasteful things one can say, especially when someone is newly grieving. It implies that the person they have lost is easily replaceable.

What to say instead:

Honor the fact that the person lost can never be replaced. You could say, “I know how much you loved [name], [he/she] will forever remain in our hearts.”

You have to be strong

Do not dismiss the right the person has to grieve. Why do they need to be strong? For who? Being “strong” is not for the benefit of the grieving person, but for those around them. People often say this to people who have children, because the assumption is that it is not good for children to see their parents sad. On the contrary, children should not be socialized to deny or hide their emotions, but to embrace and process it. By seeing your parent express sadness, but deal with it in healthy ways such as talking to a friend, crying on someone’s shoulders, and talking to their kids about how they feel, this builds more resilient children.

What to say instead:

If you are concerned about the wellbeing of a child or children, rather ask, “How are the kids holding up?” Or, if you feel they need some relief from all the grief, how about offer to take the kids for a walk or to the park, or even just to spend some time with the kids at home while the grieving person takes time to grieve.

They wouldn’t want you to feel sad

It may not be your intention, but saying this is synonymous with guilt-tripping the person into not feeling sad. Of course nobody want to see their loved one feel sad, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t. Grief and sadness is a necessary part of processing the loss, and saying that can make the person feel like they aren’t handling the loss “correctly.”

What to say instead:

Sometimes people need to hear that it is okay to feel sad. Say, “I can see you are really sad, just know that I am here for you.” This let’s the person know that you know that they are feeling sad and that it is okay.

At least they aren’t suffering now

This may be true, particularly when the person who died had been suffering from pain prior to passing, however the grieving person does not need to be reminded of this pain, nor do they want to believe that anything is better than having their loved one around. Saying this can also make the person feel guilty for wishing their loved one was still alive, as though they should be thankful for the loss.

What to say instead:

Rather focus on the positive attributes about the person’s life that the grieving person would want to remember by saying something like, “[name] showed so much strength,” or “I will always remember [name]’s [positive trait e.g. laugh].”

If you need anything, give me a call

This is probably the most common offer of help given to a grieving person, so it will surprise many to hear that it is one of the most unhelpful things you can say. When someone is overcome with grief, it can be difficult for them to plan ahead and think about what help they will need, and when they do realize they need help it can be very difficult for many people to actually pick up the phone and call you.

What to say instead:

If you are sincere in your offer of help, rather be specific in your offering. For example, if you know you are going to the grocery store, you could give the person a call and ask if they need any groceries that you can drop off. The influx of visitors who come to pay their respects can also place a huge burden on the grieving person, so offer to serve guests tea, or offer to bake a cake or cook a meal.

At least they lived a long life, some people die so young

It doesn’t matter how long the person lived, losing their presence in your life is still hard. Saying this implies the person lived long enough and that the grieving person should feel grateful that the person hadn’t died sooner.

What to say instead:

Share your favorite memory of the person they have lost instead, as this acknowledges the life the person lived without dismissing that the fact that the grieving person will not be able to make new memories and that this is a source of great sadness. For example, “I will always remember that time… [he/she] will be sorely missed.”

It is not always easy to thing of the right thing to say in the moment. If you are at a loss for words, there is no shame in admitting so. Tell the person, “I wish I knew the right words to say, just know that I am here for you”.

Giving someone who is grieving a firm, supportive hug can go a long way.

There are plenty of career options in the world: banker, teacher, salesperson, policeman, firefighter, astronaut, and so many more that fall outside of the realm of commonly known positions. I’m sure you knew when you were 6 that you’d be a train conductor or a pianist someday. There are so many different paths a person can take in life. And, while many of us end up in desk jobs and sometimes dream about throwing out our blazers and moving to another country, most of us don’t.

In casinos and clubs around the world, employees called hosts wine and dine high rollers and VIPs, deliver services, and basically fulfill the VIPs needs while they are at the establishment. They generally have the authority to offer complimentary services, like free food and drinks, and are trying to build and maintain a great relationship between the casino/club and the patron. If you love casinos or clubs, have great customer service skills, and enjoy being active and social, this could be a great job for you!

Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster and Vice President of Brooklyn Brewery, one of the country’s top 40 breweries, says a Brewmaster is essentially “the chef of the brewery and he maintains complete responsibility for beer production, from concept through finished product, along with running the brewhouse and ensuring quality control.”

It’s not all about the beer, though, brewmasters need to know organic chemistry, yeast biology, recipe design, flavor, and aroma evaluation. This means a true love of the craft, not simply a fondness for the beverage.

11. Professional Healthcare Traveler

Whatever your healthcare specialty might be, you could be taking travel assignments. According to PanTravelers.org, “To be a happy and successful traveler, you must have a sense of adventure, a willingness to adapt and not mind being the perpetual new kid on the block. Travelers must be able to adapt to new situations quickly. They must be able to walk into a new hospital and feel comfortable in their environment within a very short period. Travelers need to be able to socialize easily with strangers, since everyone will be a stranger at first.”

Hospitals hire travelers because they have some serious staffing problems and need someone who can perform their jobs extremely well, so travelers are expected to be very knowledgeable in their field and can expect little to no orientation in some very new environments. If you have the right personality and prepare yourself well, you will find that being a traveling healthcare professional is a fun and rewarding experience!

12. Aircraft Repossession Person

If people and corporations can’t make payments on their airplanes, a repo man (or woman!) has to go out and get it! Airplane repo men have a dangerous job. They research, track, trace, repossess, fly, and deliver airplanes. Whenever payments for airplanes become overdue, airplane repo men are hired by the bank to repossess the aircraft.

Here’s how the job works: The bank contacts the airplane repo company about a specific aircraft, which is then tracked through records for fuel purchases, hangar rentals, tie downs, and FAA records. Next, the airplane repo person must travel to the destination to legally steal the aircraft. Repossession can be accomplished with master keys and propeller locks, or it might require fast work and risky takeoffs. All of this is combined with the thrill of flying the plane into the sunset. The pay is approximately 6 to 10% of resale value of each repossessed plane they capture and return. Not just anyone can do this job, the applicant must be an excellent pilot licensed to fly all sorts of aircrafts, as they may have to fly a private jet, a 747, a crop duster, a twin engine prop plane, a rusted float plane, or even a traffic helicopter in the line of duty.

13. Trail Builders

Trail Builders, or Trail Maintenance Workers, build and maintain trails that lead us on fantastic adventures through the wilderness. They are designed for hikers, bikers, backpackers, climbers, dogs, ATVs, horseback riders, and any other outdoor enthusiasts. Trails are found across our country’s mountains, valleys, and forests. Every trail must be maintained, and typically trail work is a seasonal job that is done when there is little snow and the weather is nicer. A trail builder’s goal is to reduce the overall impact on the environment, as trails eventually get rutted out, overgrown, washed out, eroded away, or covered up. The impact of people, rock slides, erosion, downed trees, and other forces of nature keep trail builders busy! You can be a Trail Builder as a volunteer, or as a paid worker at anywhere from $8-20 per hour.

14. Avalanche Forecaster

An Avalanche Forecaster’s job is to advise the public on what the snow is doing. When snow piles up over the winter season, it creates a sort of layer cake of different storms. The snow pack is affected by mountain weather, aspect, slope, sun exposure, and it can create weak layers, and those weak layers can cause deadly avalanches.

If you love snow, this could be a great job for you, as you’ll spend about 75% of your time outside in the snow. The job entails looking at mountain weather, snow pack, avalanche activity, and historical data to promote avalanche awareness, write and document avalanche reports, forecasts, advisories, special warnings, accidents, reports, and statistics, and then make the information available to the public.

If you don’t have a science or snow-related degree, don’t worry, as all avalanche forecasters must have official avalanche certifications from organizations like the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education or the Canadian Avalanche Association.

15. Elephant Trainer

Some elephants can lie down, stand on their hind legs, draw and paint, throw a ball, spray water, play the drums, or even sing. An Elephant Trainer has the job of teaching these massive animals impressive tricks and proper behaviors. To train elephants, you may bribe the animals with food or with touch, and likely be required to clean up after the large beasts and provide them with their food and water. Additionally, you’ll exercise them and ensure that these intelligent creatures have enough mental stimulation so that they don’t become bored and possibly destructive. Elephant trainers are most often employed by circuses and zoos all around the world, along with amusement parks and movie studios.

Sources of elephant training knowledge include the American Zoological Association’s Elephant Management Course and a more recreational, once-in-a-lifetime option is to attend a 3-day, $100 course at the Elephant Conservation Centre School in Thailand. But the most important training is hands-on experience. You should apprentice and do internships with elephants if at all possible.
