Photograph People On Drugs To Show How They Affect Their Brains
For this project I had each individual take a different substance. I took a portrait of each person while they were peaking on the substance. I then overlaid a picture or something that symbolized the substance they were on.
Adderall
During the last 5-7 years, adderall has become increasingly popular among college students. Its side effects include a heightened sense of motivation, focus, and concentration. Presumably, this is the perfect mind set which allows users to “pull all-nighters”, read hundreds of pages at a time, and write in depth, lengthy papers. What many do not realize is how widely this drug is also used among medical professionals.
LSD
This encounter involved a young woman taking two hits of LSD. I spent the day with her as she “tripped” out in a local park. She noted intricate visuals and brightened colors, and a general heightened sense of her surroundings.
Cocaine
This was an all night adventure that began with a couple drinks out at a local bar. This participant said it can become custom with some people after a couple drinks to grab a bag (cocaine) to keep “level”. Cocaine gives its users side effects including increased alertness as well as feelings of well-being and euphoria. The night ended around 4am after meeting a group of friends at a house for an after hours gathering.
Crack Cocaine
This night was one of the most interesting. I watched him convert the cocaine into the smokable version, “Crack” which gets its name from the cracking or popping sound it makes when it is being smoked. He explained he was feeling more energized, more alert and more sensitive to sight, sound and touch.
Psilocybin
This gentleman took the hallucinogenic mushrooms before we went out to a local nightclub. The loud music, bright LED screens, and lasers made for a perfect “trip” for him. Psilocybin has been know to make colors look more vivid, and can increase clarity in sound. Users have also reported a higher connection to nature if taken in proper settings.
THC
Rivaled only by alcohol, marijuana is the most widely used recreational substance. In recent years, marijuana has gained a lot of respect for its legitimate medical purposes. It is rapidly losing its sense of taboo and becoming more easily, legally, and readily available than ever before with Colorado and Washington’s legalization of the substance. The American public will soon find out if taxing and controlling this substance will be beneficial to the US economy. Twinkies made their comeback just in time.
MDMA
She took a dose of pure MDMA, also known as “molly”. MDMA users can experience mental and physical euphoria, increased empathy, sociability, insightfulness, and enhanced tactile sensations. MDMA has been used in couples therapy and is also known to help treat PTSD. This participant spent the remainder of evening dancing with friends.
Caffeine
Millions of people rely on their morning cup of coffee to get ready for their day. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and can fight off drowsiness and make a user more alert. Legal and unregulated, caffeine is the worlds most widely used psychoactive substance. In the United States 90% of adults consume caffeine daily.
Methamphetamine
I encountered this man wandering the streets on a hot summer night; he was wearing a full winter jacket and no shirt. During our conversation he told me about how he spoke to angels under a bridge about his long struggle with methamphetamine. He described the feeling as a sudden rush of pleasure, increased energy, focus and self-confidence
Oxycontin
This man is a Vietnam vet and has been taking painkillers for the last 20 years. Some users experience a euphoric response to opiate medications; since these drugs also affect the brain regions involved in reward. Those who abuse opiates often seek to intensify their experience by taking the drug in ways other than those prescribed.
Ketamine
Ketamine has been gaining ground as a new, cheaper alternative to MDMA or Cocaine. This user described the experience as watching the world turn to legos and breaking apart followed by everything getting smaller and turning flat until that flatness turns to a point.
Beer
While this is probably one of the most common substances used, I felt it important to include it in the series. This man spent the night out at a couple bars consuming only beer.
Hard Liquor
It is likely that most people have shared this experience. A night out taking shot after shot, only to chase it with another and perhaps a couple mixed drinks. We all know that it quickly leads to blurred or double vision.
Nicotine
Tobacco was critical in the development of the southern colonies in early America until cotton replaced it. In small doses it can act as a stimulant, it has also been reported to act as a relaxant. Nicotine is historically known as one of the hardest addictions to break. Over a billion people world wide use nicotine in one form or another.
New Leash On Life Matches Prison Dogs With Prisoners
When I was a little girl I toured a local animal shelter. The staff there assured me that 90% of adoptable animals successfully found homes. That impressed me then, but as I got older and worked in the veterinary field I came to realize that the key word in that figure was "adoptable". So when someone surrenders their dog to the pound because they just don't have time for it, they are told that their dog has a 90% chance of getting adopted, which is a great statistic, but what they don't consider is that if their dog huddles, sits scared in the corner, or nervously lifts his lip at a stranger staring at him through the bars of his cage, he is no longer considered "adoptable" and his chances of leaving out the back door in a dumpster significantly increase.
When I first heard of a program where inmates at prisons were given puppies to raise as guide dogs for the blind, I thought it was an amazing idea. However, there are other prison programs that aren't just working with pure bred puppies with perfect pedigrees, but with unadoptable pound puppies that are often just hours away from being euthanized. Instead of killing off dogs that are high energy with bad manners due to neglect or abuse, they are sending them to prisons where the inmates are able to socialize and train these dogs 24 hours a day 7 days a week and rehabilitate them into the perfect family pet. These well behaved dogs are then adopted out to loving families who didn't have the time to rehabilitate the dogs themselves.
The reason for this high kill rate is simply due to lack of room in the shelters. Some breeds never even make it into a kennel to be put on display for possible adoption; they are simply euthanized without even being given a chance.
There are over two million inmates incarcerated within the United States and many more at minimum security facilities. Luckily, for both canine and prisoner alike, there are programs which take dogs in danger of euthanasia and pair them with an inmate for rehabilitation.
A New Leash On Life is one of these programs that work with prisons to rehabilitate pound puppies on death row. They provide training to the inmates which teaches them how to care for the dogs, teach basic obedience, and socializes the dogs which then allows them to be adopted out to grateful families
Inmates are perfect candidates for training these unadoptable dogs because they are able to be with them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are completely responsible for 100% of their dog's care which includes: feeding, training, grooming and house-breaking.
The inmates benefit from this program as much as their canine companions do. The relationship forged between inmate and dog creates empathy, compassion, and love. It also allows them to gain a sense of responsibility and purpose so they can enter society as productive citizens once paroled.
There are workshops that the inmates attend which teaches them life skills and job readiness. Many inmates have the opportunity to get paid internships in the animal care field when they are paroled.
So not only are at risk shelter dogs rehabilitated into dogs ready to join forever homes, but the inmates who are often in and out of prison, are able to gain skills that they can apply to future employment.
New Leash On Life USA truly believes and stand behinds their belief that everyone deserves a second chance, both pound puppy and prison inmate.
The inmates do such a great job rehabilitating these unadoptable dogs, that there is a list of potential families waiting to adopt the dogs that graduate the program, which takes a couple months to complete.
The prison program is doing so well placing dogs in adoptive homes, and these dogs are so well behaved due to their training, that New Leash On Life USA has a new program where they specifically place these dogs with those who suffer from emotional and psychological conditions.
Several of the dogs have done amazing things when adopted. They have helped their new owners cope with conditions such as Autism, stroke victims, and those suffering from depression. The new program specifically places these prison puppies with veterans and their families who are suffering from PTSD. The dogs are prepared to support these veterans with their emotional and psychological affects due to PTSD. So not only does the program save the dog and their inmate, but it also helps to save our veterans too!
